History

First sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1498.  Between 1609 and 1783 the island changed hands from the Spanish to the British.  It was awarded to Britain in 1783 under the treaty of Versailles.  Grenada achieved its Independence from Britain on February 7, 1974.

Sightseeing

    Beimont Estate, located in Belmont, St. Patrick's, 300 yr old plantation that offers unique link from past to present.

    Churches:

        Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.  Tower built in 1818

        St. Andrew's Presbytery, Dating back to 1830 located on Estang Road.  also known as Scots' Kirk.  built with the help of the Freemasons.

        St. George's Anglican Church.  Bult in 1825 on Church Street. Filled with historic plaques and statues.

        St. George's Methodist Church, Constructed in 1820 on Green Street. This is the oldest church in St. George's.

    Forts:

        Fort Frederick. Competed in 1791, commands panoramic view of St. George's.

        Fort George.  Built in 1706 overlooking the harbour. Is now headquarters for the Royal Grenada Police Force, but is open for sightseeing.

    Grand Etang National Park. Major tourist attraction, Covers 30 acres and lake is 1,740 feet above sea level, and is situated in a rain forest.
